Gamespot talked to Associate Producer Cuck Yager about Pool of Radiance:

GS: What is your response to the criticism that these battles can get repetitive?

CY: All turn based combat can be seen as repetitive after a while. The fact that you cycle through turn after turn is a function of the system in place, but the variety of creatures, the varying strengths of your foes, and the tactical elements that are available should keep this pretty fresh to the player. There will always be counts of some dry encounters and long combats, but overall I think the game moves along enough to provide variety to the end user.
