PC Paradox has written a preview of Eve Online, the upcoming futuristic MMORPG by CCP. Here's a bit:
What is making this game so awe inspiring? Well to be blunt, the developers have a fantastically ambitious idea for the whole game world. Although not revolutionary, EVE is evolving so many parts of the genre that it is bordering on revolutionary. Persistent game data has been the most important feature of MMORPGs in the past, but CCP is taking this above and beyond "the next level". CCP has modeled so many in game systems and woven them together into a tightly connected game world that it is simply impressive that such a small company could do it. There are many systems within the game which have been modeled, such as the economy, combat, power, allegiance, and so forth. Data created within the game for each character interacts with not only other characters but NPCs as well, who all have their own stats and in game data that changes dynamically according to players' actions. Now imagine all the complexity of this and then place it in a system which will be holding 10s of 1000s of players, who will be traveling around in a universe which will hold over 5000 systems, and be flying in well over 50 possible ships from each of the 4 main races: Amarr, Gallente, Minmatar, and Caldari. One can only hope that CCP can pull off such an ambitious system, for it should be quite an amazing game if they do.
