The official site for Asheron's Call 2 has posted an article about music in Asheron's Call 2, written by sound designer and composer Geoff Scott. Here's an excerpt from this nice background feature:
The process we went through at Turbine in designing the music system for AC2 was an extensive one, since we wanted to do something that hadn't been done in an online game before.. In getting started, our goal was to incorporate into the game a dynamic interactive score that was both informative and comprehensive. To accomplish this goal we wanted to integrate the idea of player-generated music, monster and creature themes, a non-repetitive and non-abrasive background score (that was specific to the biome the character was in and the race of the character), and lastly convey a sense of game related dynamics (i.e. danger and safety). Compositionally and technically, each of these ideas represents a significant challenge, which is compounded by having to assimilate them together. As the composer, I had many hurdles and challenges to face; since this was essentially an exercise in musical problem solving. Looking back at it now, I see that I couldn't have done it without the support of Jason Booth and Dan Ogles, who were not only my technical support for programming and implementation, but also my spiritual advisors and often my fire fighters. This is the type of project where you must be prepared to scrap your ideas and go back to the drawing boards many times.
