As always it's Bill Roper, VP of Blizzard Entertainment who is on the receiving end of questions - from GameSpot Australia in this case. It's pretty much the "post mortem" sort of Q&A.
Here's a bit:GS: Where do you think the real time strategy game genre is headed?
BR: There is a solid foundation that has been built over the last decade as to what players expect to see in an RTS. Much like any specific genre, our goal as developers is to build upon that foundation with new and interesting innovations and ideas. StarCraft, for example, introduced the idea of three distinct and unique races, each providing a different experience. Warcraft III built upon that and added in the concept of making each unit you control have a deeper meaning while at the same time making the world in which the game was set more alive and personal to the player. Going forward, it is up to all of us to find new ways to approach the RTS concept - much like there are still new and great films that come out based on very specific genres. | Source: Blue's |
