Earth And Beyond: 4/10 points |
Having played nearly every mmog on the market since 1995, and now playing E&B daily since release, the obvious GLARING fault with it is:
there's nothing "going on" in the universe - there's no point to any of the activities.
You fly around, chat, shoot some mobs, gain some levels, make some money, do some missions... all so that you can... do what? Nothing. Except more of the same. Talk about a treadmill.
There's nothing beyond those isolated activities, no =Point= or =Goal= to the gameworld. No over-arching Mystery or Intrigue or Epic Saga or Good-vs-Evil Conflict to get involved with. Nothing. Nothing is going on in the universe.
E&B is not so much a "game" (let alone a "Role Playing Game"), as it is a casual diversion, where 2000 players are "alone together" just kind of puttering around doing random, pointless, isolated, unrelated "stuff" over and over again.

The Temple of Elemental Evil - A Classic Greyhawk Adventure: 3/10 points |
Warning to people considering buying ToEE:
an =Unusually Large= number of players, FAR more than is "normal" for PC games, are experiencing Frequent/Constant Crashing to desktop and other Game Stopping -fatal- bugs.
This occurs in both the Retail CD version and the downloadable version.
Again, this is not the usual percentage of gamers who always seem to have problems with any PC game... this is a highly unusual situation where games get "corrupted" for no apparent reason.
In my own case (Retail CD), after a week of nearly Bug Free play, for no reason I just suddenly started crashing to desktop =every= time I tried to zone, =anywhere=.
Now all 5 of my save games have this bug, in completely different locations, and I can no longer play.
The official Atari patch is due out this Friday the 7th, my advice would be to WAIT before purchasing, or before starting to play and risking wasting dozens of hours and having to start all over due to corrupt save games. |
