Gamepen has a hands-on preview of Disciples 2 - Sacred Lands online. They also sport some 9 screenshots. Here is a comparsion between Disciples 2 and HoMM 4:
One difference from Heroes is that you have only six creature slots: three melee slots and three ranged slots. Creatures cannot reach the three ranged slots unless they a) have a ranged attack, or b) destroy all three melee creatures in front. The back three slots are usually manned by creatures who have no melee attack at all, like spellcasters and healers. One small difference from Discples is that there is a larger battle area to view, with only one side's creature status squares viewed at any time - they can be toggled back and forth to view both sides, of course.
Again, the battle screens are lovely. The arena changes to fit the terrain they're fighting on, and the heroes and monsters themselves are 3D-rendered sprites. The spell effects are pretty, as well as some of the attacks (usually from heroes who have sword trails as they swing.)
The other large difference between Heroes and Discples is that in order to increase your territory (and therefore control resources and terrain), you have to have a Rodbearer (ie. Archangel is one type) "stake out" a portion of land with a rod, for a certain amount of gold. Every turn that passes causes the area of the rod's effect to expand. A good rod will make the ground become greener and more fertile, while an evil one will create a burnt, volcanic effect. Only Rodbearers may destroy an enemy's planted rod.
Disciples was a sleeper hit, an excellent game imho, and so we can be looking forward to the second installment of this game... |
