Xen Gamers talked to producer Tanaka Hiromichi and director Ishii Kouichi about Final Fantasy XI. Here's a bit from this interview:
Dengeki: Was the average beta tester a hardcore Final Fantasy player, or an average gamer?

Hiromichi-san: I'd say it was evenly distributed between Final Fantasy fanatics and casual players. There were some players who never experienced the series before the beta test.

Kouichi-san: Generally speaking, the average tester was someone who truly enjoyed playing games. They were mostly older and fell in loves with games during the Super Famicom era.

Dengeki: Was the beta version of Final Fantasy XI very close to the finished version?

Hiromichi-san: Naturally, some aspects of the game have been changed since the beta test version. Nothing major was changed, we basically used feedback from the players to help resolve some balancing issues.

Kouichi-san: New boss characters were added, and the player growth rate was adjusted. We also watched how players reacted within the environments to make sure the size of some objects weren't prohibitive. The speed of recovery during battle was also studied, we didn't want players creating 'safety zones.' [laughs..]
