RPGDot 2003 Awards: Best RPG-Strategy
The RPGDot Team, 2004-01-16

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2003. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2003 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2003.

Best RPG-Strategy

There were a few RPGs last year that were labelled as being a mixture between RPG and strategy. From this small selection a winner rises.

The winner: Silent Storm
In a world racing to produce simplified games with mass-market appeal and cross-promotional opportunities, Nival's WWII-themed Silent Storm dares to head in the opposite direction. Not only does Silent Storm feature detailed turn-based tactical squad combat but it also has fantastic isometric graphics and innovative, fully deformable environments that really impact the gameplay. Add more depth with some well-developed RPG elements and you have one of the best strategy games in years.

Runner Up: Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne
A couple of classic turn-based fantasy strategy games made a return in 2003 and Age of Wonders 2 is one of the best yet. With a dozen playable races, sprawling maps and difficult but well-balanced tactical turn-based combat, Age of Wonders is an engrossing game. Throw in an excellent mix of sharp and stylish 2D graphics, great sound and generally good interface and its little wonder our readers enjoyed it.

Second Runner Up: Lord of the Rings - War of the Ring
Take Liquid's Battle Realms, spruce it up with some new graphics effects and throw in the Lord of the Rings license and you have War of the Ring. Liquid has stuck to fairly standard RTS formula with only a few tweaks such as "Fate" points that allow you to buy upgraded gear but it's undoubtedly the setting that is the biggest draw card. There are several recognisable set pieces recreating famous battles and it's fun to play as the evil hordes.
