Still server woes and a goodbye to Garrett

The site was down for nearly 6 hours today, and we are still not really knowing what is going on there. While taking down most of the ads (and most of our income) did help in some way, we still see server load climb high for no apparent reason. The next thing we will try to do is to up the amount of RAM in our box, or even switch from the serer we have now to a larger unit with more CPU power. Give us some days to try to sort things out - spending money without knowing what would be best isn't a thought I find very pleasing.

The reason for these troubles could well be something nice: success. The average number of pageviews doubled over the last month, now being well in the 5 digit numbers per day. But still: this shouldn't be something to bog the server down...

It's my sad duty to report a change in the staff of this site: after two years, Garrett, our Editor in Chief, decided to take a break and deal a little bit more with real life. He asked me to free him from his duties in the news staff in order to find some more spare time. I can fully understand his point - you spend 3-5 hours a day on that site now in order to keep things going, and this is still an unpaid job. So from today on, I will once again take the duties of Editor in Chief back on me.

Garrett had a nice site with release lists for nearly all CRPGs when I came to know him. At this time, RPGDot was still called blinkingdot.com and had about 60 visitors a day. I asked Garrett to join our site, and he agreed without much hesitation. His dedication and knowledge, and most of all his impressive way to talk to developers and publishers, helped RPGDot a lot. It was Garrett who got them interested in this fan project, and it was him who built our sites' reputation. Being a two man project at this time, he always stepped in when I had a lot to do in my real life job, when I was away to do some shooting or being in studios. It's a safe bet to say that this site will miss him, as will our readers.

Nevertheless, the show must go on, and we will continue to bring you news and articles about role playing games. Garrett will not be lost completely, he will still be doing fetaures and articles, but keep a lower profile here. Once again a public "thank you" to him - it's his site as well as it is mine, and it will always be...
