CD Projekt joint CEO Michal Kicinski has been interviewed at Next Generation about The Witcher:Why did CD Projekt choose to bring a game to North America that is based on a Polish-language only series of fantasy novels?
We made our decision based on several factors. First of all, having decided to create a role-playing game, we wanted it to present a truly believable world, as well as convincing characters. That’s why we decided to base it on a world already created by a professional fantasy writer, instead of creating the world from scratch. At first our decision may seem quite irrelevant, yet the opportunities presented by using a vivid world depicted in a series of seven novels are not to be underestimated.
...It has never been our aim to base the game on an established property for the sake of increasing sales, but rather to use a known world in order to create a better game. Thus, it’s not really important whether or not Sapkowski’s works are recognized in the markets the game will reach, including North America. |
