IGN has published a interview with lead designer Josh Saywer from Icewind Dale 2 that also contains a trailer of the game. It's 15MB and shows off a lot of effects and levels. Here's a bit from the preview:
IGNPC: How do you feel the 3rd edition rules improve on the system used in the original Icewind Dale? Are there any particular aspects of the rules that you think don't fit with your game design?
Josh Sawyer: Strictly in mathematical terms, I believe 3E is much easier to balance. All game systems can be "powergamed" for maximum effect, but I think the mechanics and scaling systems are less open to abuse. Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 are both combat-heavy games. When the "game" aspect is so heavily emphasized in an RPG, proper game balance is critical.
The most obvious things about 3E that don't fit are attacks of opportunity and readied actions. We are not implementing these aspects of the system because they rely too heavily upon the sequential turn-based nature of pen and paper gaming. |
