RPGDot 2002 Awards
Best Non-RPG

The RPGDot Team, 2002-01-08

In the last weeks of December 2002, you had the opportunity to vote for the best RPGs released in 2002. Nobody knows better what these are then you the player and as such The RPGDot 2002 Awards will look good on any game receiving one.
We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games.

Best Non-RPG

Besides playing RPG's we also play other games (well some of us do...). This award is for that non-RPG we played and liked the best.

The winner: Mafia
Who knows? Maybe Mafia would not have won this award if it wouldn't have been for GTA III which was released about three months earlier. Both games were evidently very similar to each other. Except Mafia was a lot more story-driven. It was almost more like an interactive movie than a game and it perfectly captured the atmosphere of a Godfather' movie with its 1930 Italian flavored gangsta setting.

Mafia was a technically very well executed game, offering many hours of exciting and enjoyable gameplay... as long as you didn't mind to be on the other side of the law.

Runner Up: Grand Theft Auto 3
GTA III was a game with great graphics, very non-linear gameplay and challenging missions. It was pure fun to freely roam around the city as an outlaw and to be as constructive or destructive as you felt.
Talking about "destructive", GTA III was also one of the more controversial games in last year's line-up. It was action-packed but some of the action did not exactly coincide with what is generally considered as good taste. However, the controversy and bans in certain countries probably helped GTA III gain more popularity, thus making it the computer game counterpart of a 'Stones' record in the (19)60's.

Second Runner Up: On One Lives Forever 2
Cate Archer is back! And with a new game engine she even looks better than before. Like it's predecessor you will be fighting the evil H.A.R.M. and will have to save the world from destruction. The game captures the 60's spy movie atmosphere very well and offers you a large variety of strange, but usefull weapons great voice acting and an addicting gameplay, making it a great experience.
It certainly deserves its place in the top 3.
