Gamecloud's John 'JCal" Callaham introduces his highly interesting and thoroughly inventive interview with Cyan World's Tim Larkin re the soundtrack to Myst V: End of Ages...
Gamecloud - You have worked in both the game and film industry. What is the difference, if any, in creating sounds and music for a movie versus doing the same for a game?
Tim Larkin - Well, you really start out the same. You create good sound either way. Where the differences begin to appear is when it comes to implementation. Whereas you can mix sounds in a linear fashion, layering as many as you see fit with film, as it all gets mixed down to the required format, in games most of the mixing is done on the fly. So as a result, you create sounds that you might not always hear together in the same way at the same time. You're also limited to the amount of channels playing at once, so you need to choose your sounds to cover everything needed a bit more carefully.
