The staff of Gameplanet have posted this rather interesting interview with Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows' lead designer, Josh Sawyer...

I have also heard that it will be possible to weild weapons, and keep them, like in an RPG. How far will this RPG portion of the game go and can you give us some more information about the weapons?
The item collection system is very focused. We wanted to make item collection important, but we didn't want micromanagement to detract from the action of the game. Players can collect four types of items: weapons, armor, shields, and amulets. Each has a specific use in the game and a small number of important statistics. As the difficulty of the levels increases, characters will find more powerful items. Most items have level restrictions, but sometimes characters will discover items with color-coded names. These colors represent more rare items. Rare items often have the power of a much higher level item, but with lower level restrictions.

Because characters can only use about half of the weapons they find in the game, we hope that the item system will encourage trading with other players, online and offline.
