Here's the press release that announces beta 5 for Eve Online (minus some parts about the story of Eve Online and company blurb):
"EVE ONLINE: THE SECOND GENESIS" MARKS MILESTONE AS FIFTH STAGE OF BETA TESTING BEGINS
Eve to Use DirectX 9 and Will Allow Gamers to Play Across Multiple Monitors; Highly Anticipated MMOG PC Game To Ship In March 2003
NEW YORK, January 23, 2003 - Simon & Schuster Interactive announced today Crowd Control Productions' (CCP) highly anticipated Massive Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) "Eve Online: The Second Genesis" has marked a milestone as testing begins for the fifth stage of beta. Also announced today EVE ONLINE will use Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and gamers will be able to play across multiple monitors (Rated "T" by the ESRB). EVE ONLINE is on schedule to ship March 2003 and will be published by Simon & Schuster Interactive in North America and by Crucial Entertainment in Europe.
EVE to Use Microsoft DirectX 9 EVE ONLINE will use the latest technology available to deliver an engaging experience for gamers. Hilmar V. Pétursson, Chief Technology Officer for CCP Games explains the benefits of using DirectX 9.
"By using DirectX 9 we will make Eve 'future proof,' meaning we can patch in special dx9 features, post release, without requiring a reboot. This will be for both sound and 3d abilities. "There are greatly improved runtime checks built into the debug runtime which reduce the time to find bugs on various hardware. As EVE is doing some amount of unconventional use of the 3d pipeline, this has already helped us to find problems. "On Cards which have a DX9 class driver (ATI Catalyst 3.0 being one), there are also new features in DX9 that increase EVE performance on hardware/drivers that support it: Two Sided Stencils, Scissor testing and Asynchronous queries."
EVE To Be Playable Across Multiple Monitors For those gamers who want to see everything around them while in space, EVE ONLINE will offer the ability to play across 3 monitors. Support for the Matrox Parhelia card allows for players to experience a full panoramic display of nearby space. Adding this feature will give an entirely new depth to the senses.
BECOMING A BETA TESTER Gamers who would like to become EVE ONLINE beta testers can sign up via the EVE ONLINE web site at www.eve-online.com. To date, nearly 100,000 gamers have signed up. |
