Funcom has now opened the official Midgard site. Midgard will be Funcom's next entry into the MMORPG scene (hopefully with a better start than Anarchy Online). Here's the press release:
FUNCOM INTRODUCES MIDGARD
The next online gaming world from Funcom
Zürich —August 28th, 2001 – As a follow up to Funcom’s recently launched online world, Anarchy Online, the international games developer and publisher today released the first public information about its new online universe for the PC. The official web site for Midgard www.worldofmidgard.com explains the basics of game-play, provides breathtaking concept art, sample music ideas, as well as information about the myths and legends that will shape the game.
First introduced behind closed doors at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Midgard recreates the world of the ancient Norse as it might have looked, a thousand years ago, during the age of the Vikings. Developed at Funcom’s Norwegian studio, the game introduces players to a fantastically detailed environment comprised of tall mountains, deep fjords, cold glaciers, and dark forests, as well as cities, towns, and villages inhabited by the players themselves. By bringing traditional single-player elements into this massively multi-player setting, Funcom hopes to offer something for everyone.
“We’re creating an incredibly detailed and believable world reflecting the history and myths of the ancient Norse, without sacrificing game-play for the sake of realism,” said Game Director Ragnar Tørnquist. "Our vision with Midgard has always been ‘low threshold, great depth’. There is room for everyone in this world with both veteran gamers and new players finding much to enjoy.”
Midgard is radically different from other online worlds because it combines styles of play from different genres, both traditional single-player as well as other multi-player games. Blending elements of role-playing, city building, resource management, exploration, diplomacy and much more, the world will eventually be populated by thousands of other players, cooperating and competing to build the strongest, richest, and most influential communities. The aim of Midgard is to deliver varied and addictive game-play, while rewarding social interaction between players. Balance is also of utter importance, whether it is the balance between resources and economy, the balance between humankind and nature, or the balance between various crafts and trades. Since supply and demand is at the heart of Midgard, every profession is as important as any other.
While a release date has yet to be decided upon, players can follow the development of Midgard through regular updates at www.worldofmidgard.com. The website will evolve together with the game, and it will feature new content, journals, interviews, and a newsletter. For corporate information about Funcom, please visit www.funcom.com. |
