Happy Puppy was very happy (9.5/10) with the Diablo 2 Expansion. Here's a snippit from their review:

All kinds of new goodies are available to aid in your quest. The most obvious is the bigger stash, letting you carry more stuffs, and there are tons and tons of stuffs to carry. [Editor's note: Craig tells me that "stuffs" is a Philly thing. I don't get it either.] New magic socketable items called jewels allow you to tweak weapons and armor to new heights. Varying sizes of charms give you bonus attributes, but at the cost of taking up precious stash real estate. Runes are special stones that can be socketed in various combinations to make your weapons and armor even crazier.

Bottom line: if you liked Diablo II and you are aching to get back in and play some more, there is no better reason than Lord of Destruction.
