Many of the older gaming crowd remember the classic arcade Gauntlet titles. They've enjoyed considerable success over more than just a few years, and there have been many ports to various home systems. There was even a successful arcade revival several years back with Gauntlet: Legends, which brought the series into 3D and allowed players to "save" their characters on the arcade machine. This series can also be considered basically the direct ancestor of today's action-RPG titles like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath.
