Life as a Modder Part I, by Clone

Rinuel, 2003-05-05

One of the most popular modders of the Morrowind community, Clone, of Sea of Destiny mod fame, has given us an interesting insight of the modder's point of view, have a look.

I wake up in the morning and look out my bedroom window. I see cars driving on the road each direction. I rub my eyes gently and think what will come of this new day. I get ready for boring old school. After the day of school I head to track practice. My next step in my day is get home and check my e-mail/private messages/websites/forums and other misc. stuff. I'm usually on MSN messenger alot chatting with my friends and other cool modders. Homework is next, then it is to the long process of finishing SoD for hopefully alot of fans I mod for the community, the good people of it at least I try to be the nicest to all, and love to post on the official forums. I mod for the love of it. When I buy a game like morrowind one of my requirements is that it must include a editor. At first the morrowind edtior I ignored it. I thought it was too advanced for me. I kept trying determined to overcome it's evil. Well I did that you could say. Now I'm a happy modder. Sure, my mods aren't that popular, but it doesn't matter to me. I just love if one person enjoys it. SoD could be my last mod but I will still stay with you all. This community of morrowind fans is one of the best I've had the pleasure to mod with. Sea of Destiny (SoD) was at first built for the game Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. An strategy game off the Age of Empires engine. It took me a whole damn summer! It was released and I was so happy! But the reaction from the community, I mean NO REACTION! The community never really replied like the morrowind one did. I was pissed off at the least. I moved Sea of Destiny to the Dungeon Siege engine. It was canceled and I moved to the morrowind engine. And I mod for it now. Want to see the old SoD huh? Well I guess you can if you keep it a secret!( http://www.geocities.com/travdark99/sod.html ) The original islands looked something like this. ( http://www.geocities.com/travdark99/main_map_kar_dagger2.jpg ) The new islands look much more improved like this. ( http://rpgplanet.com/morrowind/sodp/MAP.jpg ) Now when I first started making these islands I kind of froze and asked the question where do I even start? My first concept of the islands was only 7. It turned to 17 when I added the mainland.

I looked for a team. Overtime I got a pretty good one which I'm blessed to have! I named us the SoD team and began to start on the biggest project I have ever did. I can report we are at 80% progress. Every island is shaped and textured. I have come along way. I'm glad I got this far even. SoD will transfer to more game engines and more. So expect to see the name Sea of Destiny some more Now with Bloodmoon coming I released info on the expansion to SoD FROST FALL.(http://rpgplanet.com/morrowind/sodp/frostfall.html ) I kind of hope to get support and nice comments every day for the project. It helps me finish it faster. I love getting e-mails and reading them.

My "other" mods? Well I have a nice collection of other mods which I call clone's plugins. Most of them are just little fun things I put together. One of my favorite was my Sky Ship mod. My first attempt to make a adventure mod was the making of Broken Glass - A Tale of Hope. I would have to say that life of a modder is really no different then a normal life. WHAT AM I SAYING? It requires hard work and dedication. Especially taking on a big project like SoD. My advice is don't take on a project too big for you like I did with SoD Expect to see more mods from me "maybe." I will try to make the community happy. But with all these modders these days what difference can you make? If one person downloads your mod and enjoys it, then you made a difference in a life! And that counts for something doesn't it? You should get a golden fishy stick! I will take a chocolate one thank you very much.

After I finish SoD I will sit back and view the community's reaction to SoD. Hopefully a good one I have been to the official forums lately and sometimes their just crazy with mean modders attacking each other. But it is getting much better. When Bloodmoon arrives I think it will open a whole new world of modding to us all. That is when you can expect alot of mods from me! Well I think that is long enough for part 1. Expect PART 2 soon. Until then have fun and keep safe!
