RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Sinclair has rated the following games:

Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura: 9/10 points

Not as good as the Fallout games, but still shining and wonderful. The setting is great. However, there is a tad too much combat, and the early appearance of Tarant spoils the other cities and towns for you. This game deserves a sequel.

Baldur's Gate 2 - Shadows of Amn: 1/10 points

This game is wretched. The system is good, the interface is great, the graphics are nice. However, it is still wretched. Why? Because it has so much lost potential. It starts off badly, with a generic "escape from dungeon" bit. It gets even worse when the plot gets kicked into cliche overdrive, combining the "Orphan with mysterious power" plot from the first game with an "evil guy who wants to use character for nefarious reason" component. Second, it is too damn epic. I want a game that is long enough that I don't burn through it in a couple days, but is short enough that I don't get bored. It was way longer than the cut-off point. Third, way too much combat and "limited" bits. By "Limited" I mean your character's movement has been locked to a small area. This happens how many times in the game? Too many. And how many people have played pen and paper D&D, and fought hundreds of combat encounters in a single campaign? I want Diablo, I'll play Diablo. The party system blew. I don't want to spend my time micromanaging several characters, one or 2 of whom (at least) have magic. This game could have been vastly better. However, somewhere along the way, it failed, and became a bloated, tedious mess. If you want a good RPG, play Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, or Arcanum. Don't play this.

Betrayal at Krondor: 9/10 points

This game holds a special place in my heart. It was the first RPG I ever played, at least on a computer. I was knee-high to a grasshopper back in the day, playing the game, acquired from the CD in PCGamer way back when on a crummy old laptop. Pure joy.

Fallout - A Post Nuclear Adventure: 10/10 points

Shares "Best game ever played" on my list with the sequel. This game is amazing.

Fallout 2: 10/10 points

Every bit as good as the sequel. What it loses in going off of the beginning plot, it gains in sheer play volume. It's a long game, but I never got bored of it. The background music (well, some of it was recycled from FO1) still plays in my head sometimes. Serious.

Jagged Alliance 2: 8/10 points

A great game. It isn't an RPG though. But still, great fun.

Planescape: Torment: 8/10 points

Splendid. This game made me happy in ways no other game did. The plot is wonderful and involving. It is quirky, without being stupid. The game is funny, thoughtful, and at points you just want to cheer. It isn't the best RPG I've ever played, but I can say that it certainly had the highest "points of emotion".
