This was the best out of all the final fantasy games. Excellent story from beginning to end. However the humor, much as it is in cartoons like "Record of lotus war" and “Star Blazers” is a bit weird. Perhaps it’s a cultural thing. Funny to them, not funny to Americans. Even though the characters had a lot of color and personality they loose they’re cool when they have to take a ride on a choc-o-boo. Other then that the settings where fantastic and the spell system and summon creature graphics where amazing. |

There are lots of different subtypes of RPGs, not all of them have to be the D&D roll your party type, some are story driven, as this game is, some are hybrids with action or strategy elements, some are online, but they are all RPGs in some sense. If stories and characterizations are important to you, as it is to me, then this is an excellent game. If stats and picking your own party and what you do througout the game is more important to you than it may not be your cup of tea, but doesn't make it a bad game. I think it's one of the better of the FF series too. It's a shame it wasn't a financial success for the PC as now we aren't getting the excellent FFX for the PC, but it seems like console RPGs and computer RPGs have two completely different auidences that don't crossover much. However I like both. |

A solid RPG and a first of Square's into the major western market and the game which really put Square on the map here. Great post-modernist style storyline and the best Final Fantasy spell system involving the gaining of experience of materia makes this a great RPG. The dialogue, the weird humour and the linearity of the games push this down to a '9', being made up only by the sheer experience of such a good story as well as the bad guy Sephiroth. |

I don't mind linear games, or predefined characters, and I much prefer RPGs to have a heavy focus on story than combat. Nevertheless, this game was ruined by two things. Number one is the combat. Random encounters are amazingly common, so it takes a long time to move through any hostile area. Considering that for me at least, combat wasn't fun at all, this was a major annoyance. Number two is writing. It doesn't seem like this game has poor quality writing as it seems like it was written for a young audience. The writing basically destroyed any possibility of me getting involved in the plot or attached to the characters. So with no fun coming out of the plot-heavy parts, and no fun coming out of the combat-heavy parts, there was nothing left in this game to entertain me. |

Really more of an adventure game than an rpg. The linear storyline (point a to point b, point b to point c, etc...) made this a thoroughly unenjoyable game for me. Plus, the absolute lack of world interactivity, the static NPCs, the horrible dialogue... shall I go on? :) |

The constant, pointless random battles that plague all Japanese console RPGs are here in force. The many cutscenes make it evident that you are not playing a role of your own making, but just helping a story progress by exploring and fighting. The story is worth it, though, as this is possibly the only RPG that has brought a tear to my eye (twice, once at Aeris' big scene and once at the end of the brief endgame cutscene). |

Best of the best...thatis wat I have to say. This game in my thoughts is what put psx on the map. For its time...the gamers were introduced to some of the nicest graphics the game industy had to offer. Though the game had a somewhat..confusing story line. The gamer was allowed to witness each characters persona, and we all know...Cloud had the best one of all. The game brought a new type of feel to what video gmes had to offer, and even though now, new games and types are taking over...FF7 is still one to b placed in the golden ages of games. I think that most people would agress aswell...that becaue of the story line, characters and ovrall system of the game...it is by far the best series that square has produced. But hay...not everone can agree with me on that, and sme out there have not even plaed the game. But for thouse of you who have, and still to this day love starting a new game,and cant wait to place that first disk in you psx...then I'm happy o write this comment about a game that even non RPG players have to respect. |

This is the best game Square has made IMO. The materia system gives you near endless opportunities for magic combinations. That and you have to find them all which I still haven't done 75 hours later. The game has excellent characters and a very strange but good story. All in all it'll keep you hooked if you give it a chance. |

this is by far tehee best game ever i stand true to FF7even though i have restarted it well over 100 times and beat the game atleast 10 or more. ok sometimes theres a charecter glitch and somtimes the graphics are kinda kidish and stupid, but i love the FMV's and the story line i love the style of people, the controls, the fighting. ok i dont like that the limit is always based on lvl 99. Because i've played to lvl 99 in normal battles not game sharks or cheats. by far the best game i have played on the rpg side. |

For all you 1ers, grow up.
This is on of the only games that was so satistfying in every way, that I can separate my gaming life into pre-FF7 and post-FF7. Ahead of its time by years, this game left me with the fondest of memories. A masterpiece & a spectacular that has still not been rivaled. |

"Quite Possibly the greatest game ever made" ring any bells or were you getting tucked in babies? I know the game was a little graphic for you guys and you probably cried and ran to your mommy when Aeris was stabbed but trashing this game simply won't make you grow anything below the belt so stop wasting your time.

this game was one of the only games when it first came out that manage to fully draw my attention to it this game has hors of engrossing gameplay to keep it lasting for weeks like attempting to master your materia or defeating all the weapons and offcourse chocobo breeding and trying to get all of the summons is a task that takes agesssss!!i love this game!!!!! |

Loving asian RPGs, I think FF7 is the best RPG ever made. Doesn't mean I don't like western RPGs, I have my favorites there as well, even play D&D Pen and Paper.
But with antagonists like Sephiroth or actually Jenova, FF7 is placed on the throne, imho :) |

forget about the gameplay, this game got the best storyline in any rpg in any console/computer up there with classics like deus ex, shenmue and chrono trigger. while it may be hard to run this one on todays computer and the graphic may be outdated the story worth all the hassle. |

I played this because of all of the people that said it had a great story. Maybe it was just me, but it made no sense, maybe it was just translated poorly? I feel that the story in Fallout, PST, and BG2 were much better. Still... It was good enough for me to want to finish it. This is by far the best RPG I have ever played in my life. Stayed true to the old skool turn based system, had one of the best plots ever and kept my attention rock solid for the whole duration. I have passed it 3 times over the years since it has come out. Overlooking the graphics now I suggest anyone who hasn;t played it to play it. Also for the time it came out the graphics were phenominal.
RPGs do not get better than this. |
