Ultima Unreal Interview

conducted and translated from German by Garrett, 2002-03-23

Another interestig MOD is in the making in Germany. It is suited for Ultima Tournament and will be a Fantasy-Action-RPG. We learned more about the project by Proejct Leader Merandis:

RPGDot: Hello! Please introduce Ultima Unreal to our readers.

Merandis: Ultima Unreal is a MOD-Project for Unreal Tournament. As one can see by the name, it will be a RPG, but not as large as Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate or any Ultima Game.
I prefer to call it a 'skin-deep' RPG-Modification. Yet there will be enough elements, so calling it an RPG is justified. The world of Ultima Unreal consits of many maps the player can explore, always looking for weapons and items and the wish to solve the main quest.

RPGDot: Tell us about the story. Is the game related to Origin's Ultima series?

Merandis: The player is one of two characters selectable, both children of a royal family, looking for their father and a way to reseal the gates of hell, which have been opened by sinister creatures. The only thing in common with Origin's Ultima series is (next to the name) the fantasy setting with medieval creatures, where the world is inhabited by humans. Of course you'll find animals like wolves or bears, but there'll also be demons and other creatures.

RPGDot: Will it be a pure RPG or rather an Action-RPG - and will there be a party?

Merandis: We try hard to keep Ultima Unreal as close to an RPG as possible, whereupon we are definately stepping back regarding conversations with NPC's with the Action-Part is still stronger here.
And yes, there will be a party, admittedly only a two man party. This means, you can for example hire a mercenary in the village, a computer controlled servant, staying by you unto its death!

RPGDot: Is there a character creation process or just the two premade characters?

Merandis: This decision has not been finalized yet, but it will most probably be like choosing one of the two premade characters where you can distribute some points on attributes, to make them more individual.

RPGDot: Tell us about the RPG-System: What attributes are there and how can they be developed?

Merandis: Attributes, which can be developed, are:

  • Strength
  • Dexterity
  • Magic
  • Vitality
  • Amor The final RPG-System has yet to be decided, but it will be something like getting points for killing opponents, which will be added to an account and upon reaching a limit you'll reach a new level and can distribute points on attributes again.

RPGDot: How is magic implemented, since there wasn't any magic in Unreal Tournament?

Merandis: We plan to have two ways of magic:

Casting by using a wand, where the wand has a special amount of uses (e.g. fireballs). This magic does not require any mana and the wands can be reloaded by magic merchants for gold.

The other way of magic is the use of magic scrolls. You choose them like a weapon and can cast the spell as long as your mana lasts. You can recharge your mana with mana potions, one kind refills half the mana, the other full mana.

Which schools of magic and how many spells we will implement depends on the time we can spend doing so, but unfortunately we don't have a lot of time :(

RPGDot: Will there be an automap

Merandis: No, but you also don't need it for the gameplay we plan!

RPGDot: How many hours of playing time do you have in mind? How many Cities, Dungeons, NPCs, Weapons, Spells, Character Classes and Races will there be?

Merandis: Very difficult question, which only time can answer. The more time we spend with Ultima Unreal, the more spells, monsters, dungeons etc there will be. If we would work for another year on Ultima Unreal, we would surely come close to the complexitiy of a full-price game.

RPGDot: In what state of development are you right now? When do you expect to have the MOD ready? And how large do you think it will be in the end?

Merandis: Ultima Unreal is in development for quite a long time already, but all the team members had great ideas, which we wanted to implement if possible. The bigger we want Ultima Unreal to get, the longer it will take of course.
One thing that takes a large amout of our time is the creation, the mapping of the world! We don't have many mappers, but therefore good ones! But it would be nice, if we could find more talented and reliable people helping us on Ultima Unreal!
I can't tell you anything about its size due to the above discussed reasons, but Ultima Unreal will definately not be small.
