|The most recent Dark Solstice development update provides a fair amount of backstory and practical information about a number of towns in the game.
The Great City is the center of social, religious, economic, and scholarly importance for the lands. There are no other cities that can rival the information and services stored behind the great walls of this city. While its underworld counterpart offers many of the same social, economic, and learning institutes, it has no religious importance and is considered inferior in this regard.
The citizens that occupy the Great City are those that exude goodness and desire to excel in the ways required by the gods. Because of this sycophantic attitude, citizens that do not abide precisely to the demands handed down by the gods are asked to leave the city and live elsewhere. Shaken and distraught that they are no longer welcome, many citizens flee the Great City and make a pilgrimage in search of a town that will allow them to take refuge. It is for this reason that small towns have begun to litter the map of our world.
