PC.IGN has visited Ion Storm to get a first look at Deus Ex II, the sequel to Warren Spector's award winning first person role-playing shooter. Highly interesting stuff spread out across a full five pages over there. Don't miss it.
Here's a teaser:Even in this early stage, you can see the detail that's being entered into both the models themselves and the texture mapping along all fronts. One of the great things about the way they're creating their look comes from the process of normal mapping. What this process does is basically trick the eye into seeing things that aren't there. You take a regular model of a good polygonal count to begin with and then add layers of texture. But the layers you're adding acts like bumpmapping. So when light passes over the texture layer, shadows will appear over wrinkles that aren't actually made of polygons. I can tell you right now that it looks absolutely amazing and allows for much lower specs than if the models had used all of the polygons they would have needed to complete that level of detail. You'll only be able to tell that all of the ridges and pockets and wrinkles on a model aren't actually physically there if you really look for them. |
