RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Rev. Layle has rated the following games:

Alternate Reality - The City: 6/10 points

not a bad first attempt at a multiple game format that all linked together. unfortunately, the game varied in playability depending on the system. 8-bit Atari and Amigas were great, C-64 was OK, and the old PC version was atrocious. Alternate Reality: The Dungeon (not on the list), however was a MUCH MORE engrossing game.

Bard's Tale 1 - Tales from the Unknown: 8/10 points

a classic of the time (while not the first to hae that 3D view - the first to do it in COLOR). however the gameplay does get a bit stagnat at times. but the game balance was decent and the puzzles for the most part fun

Bard's Tale 2 -The Destiny Knight: 4/10 points

Bard's Tale 2 was long, frustrating, and very little new. i thought it was a huge downer from BT 1

Bard's Tale 3 - Thief of Fate: 6/10 points

the story of this game is actually kinda cool - and the revisiting of Skara Brae is neat (going to the old guild to advance still). however the mega level character required to beat the game and the non-stop combats and a linear story line makes the ending of the game an exercise in casting "NUKE" and healing the party until the end i WILL admit, that the method defeating the final enemy is rather cool tho :)

Buck Rogers 1: Countdown to Doomsday: 8/10 points

not a bad outing for SSI's first outing into TSR's sci-fi world. but matrix cubed is a bit better :)

Champions Of Krynn: 9/10 points

you know i do not remember much about this game. i do know it was another one of SSI's D&D styled 8-bit games. i rate it a 9 for two reasons... 1) i remember the story being excellent.. and 2) it's the only SSI D&D game i have ever wanted to play to the end!

Fallout - A Post Nuclear Adventure: 9/10 points

great game - the adventure is a bitr short - and afew logic/dialouge issues. other than... it is one of the best open-ended non-linear CRPGs i have ever played - aside from it's sequel :)

Fallout 2: 10/10 points

huge world - multiple ways to do practically everything. you can "hack-n-slash" your way through or simply sneak your way through OR even talk your way through. kept me busy til the very end. prolly my favorite CRPG ever.

Neuromancer: 8/10 points

i never finished this game but i do remember thinking that it had a very unique game system and unique lookl and interface. it wasn't all about hack-n-slash - it was all about puzzles, big corporations, cyberspace, and money! :)

Phantasie: 8/10 points

for its time it was a bit differect than other RPGs. it did not rely on fancy 3D or a cumbersome object world like ultima. the sotry was rather cool with lots and lots of places to visit. it's combat system was unique for it's time and some of puzzles were maddening. the graphics sucked in some places and in someplaces i thought "aww right!" - but it is a game i played over and over and over (as well as part II and III) so an 8 it gets - a special place in my CRPG history

Questron 2: 6/10 points

quaint little game based on Ultima 1 and Legacy of the Ancients style. better than it first game (original Questron) and is fun to play.. but offerred very little innovation. s'ok to play once... no need to do it again tho after you complete it. legacy of the ancients is way more fun.

Wasteland: 9/10 points

my second favorite RPG of all time (yes fallout 2 beat Wasteland - becuase fo variety and sotry). Wastelnd had a pseudo-non-linear plot... multiple solutions to puzzles/situations and a great character development system. i have played it countless times. the only negative? too much random encounters and too much XP based on combat. if it wasn't for that it would have gotten a 10

Wizard's Crown: 8/10 points

one of my favorite 8-bit RPGs. excellent skill advancement system and great detail. people may not like the ultra-detailed combat system - but it worked perfectly and once you got the hang of it, it made perfect sense. the graphics were a bit dated (even on 8-bit) but the game play is all there. of course... The Eternal Dagger (the sequel) royally pissed me off

Wizardry 1 - Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord: 5/10 points

ok wizard 1 sucked. but to keep it from such a nasty rating (1 or 2 perhaps)_, i would say, it did start a whole style of 8-bit pseduo 3D CRPGs. it's wasn't the worst game i have ever played... but it was rather boring
