Obsidian Visit @ NW Vault

Maximus, guru of NW Vault, visited Obsidian Entertainment, developers of the upcoming RPG Neverwinter Nights 2. He has posted his thoughts and impressions about the visit, as well as some pictures of the gang.
Nathaniel showed how the lighting system has been greatly improved with light now dynamic and glistening off the character's armor. Thanks to the new dynamic lighting system, shadows and lighting are handled in real time where each pixel is calculated depending on the light reflecting off it's surface and every other surface. Add to that, they've used normal maps, which use very hi-res textures scaled down on low polys to give the impression of very high detail without the cost of a lot of polygons. More on the graphics a bit later.
Nathaniel then took the character around the area a bit and showed the freedom of camera which is very much like what's now available since BioWare unlocked the camera. It's your basic 3rd person view, going from an isometric angle far out, to right up close over the character's shoulder. No first person perspective for those of you who haven't read the FAQ. While dropping to the character's feet, to look straight up, doesn't appear to be an option, all the trees are now complete with treetops, though Obsidian couldn't comment on ceilings in interiors. Another major improvement are the skies, which give the author incredible amount of control over the atmosphere.
Lots of tasty information is in this article and part two will be published on Wednesday. You can read the whole article at NW Vault.
