Elysian Productions (well, at least Derek Licciardi and Tom DeSanctis) sat down with Sanqualis for a Q&A about their upcoming MMORPG Ages of Athiria. One thing I noted with some happy feelings is that their game will rather be skill based than level based:
2) Many MMORPG nowadays turn out to become "monster slashing online environments". where most people just want to level up in order to survive against stronger opponents. Will "Ages of Athiria" trace the path in a new direction? How do you plan to avoid (or embrace) such a phenomenon?
E.P. : We plan to replace the "leveling" system with one that is skill based in nature and multifaceted in application. Our system uses a list of skills grouped into knowledge categories to guide a character's advancement. These skills and knowledge categories aggregate into what we call professions to give a player an understanding of how experienced they are in a given profession. It is entirely possible to have a mature, "high level" character in our game that has absolutely no combat experience. Combat in Ages of Athiria is not the only way to gain experience. While a complete and robust combat system will be part of the game, you will find that it is just that, a part of the game. The crafting skills, trading system and magic system will all be sufficiently robust such that a player will be able to spend their entire character's lives working towards goals in these non-combat professions if they choose to. We are aiming to make every aspect of our game fun while trying to avoid making every aspect of our game combat-centric. |
