Chapter 1 - Introduction

Myrtana. A grand kingdom under the rule of King Rhobar the Second. In his many years King Rhobar was able to defeat all his foes. That is, until one day.

It was a quiet day in the town of Khorinis. The villagers went through their daily routines, not expecting anything new. Suddenly the sound of drums quaked across the land. The town went dead silent. They all knew these were drums of war.
The sound of commotion grew in the town as people began climbing the mighty walls of Khorinis to see what was going on. At first there was nothing on the open valley by their town. But suddenly they began to hear weapons being drawn. And the marching of thousands seemed to shake the ground.
Finally someone appeared on one side of the valley. And then, another. Not long after those two, about one thousand more appeared. They were Orcs. Massive creatures set on killing. They held up their enormous axes, already soaked with blood. The villagers were horrified.

On the other side of the valley, King Rhobar's mighty army prepared for battle. The archers aimed their bows. The others drew their swords. As mighty as this army was they all looked unprepared. Most of them looked as if they would fall asleep on the spot. Others just looked surprised. The villagers of Khorinis didn’t feel comforted by this.
The Orcs began to charge the human army. The archers were all that they feared, for they had no long-distance weapons. A few hundred of the Orcs fell dead within 30 seconds of the battle. But they kept going.
The archers of the human army were always successful in getting their foes to retreat early in a battle. This battle was different. The Orcs were more determined to kill then any other foe. No matter how many were killed by the archers, more and more seemed to come. Things were beginning to look hopeless.

The Orcs had finally made it to the humans frontline. They helplessly watched as the Orcs' huge axes fell toward them. The archers began to retreat, no longer with the advantage. The rest of Rhobar's army fought as best they could but they knew they had lost.
The sound of victory came from the Orcs' trumpets. They camped out on the valley, feasting on the dead humans. They couldn’t get past Khorinis' walls, so they shook their weapons at the scared villagers instead and threw bloody body parts of the dead humans over the walls.

The people of Khorinis were trapped from the outside world. It was a long time until more of King Rhobar's men arrived to finish off the Orcs there. Though they were successful in doing this, the Orcs were far from defeated.

The war with the Orcs took its toll, and the prisoners of the realm were forced to work in the mines to collect ore. This ore was a key element in defeating the Orcs. They used the ore to create armor and weapons for the army.
The prisoners were growing angry, and words of rebelling passed through the mines. King Rhobar heard of this and sent 12 of his best magicians to create a magical barrier around the mines. This barrier would trap the prisoners in the mines.
But something went terribly wrong with the barrier. Something disrupted the delicate magic. The magicians created the barrier, but it grew bigger than they wanted. It grew so that it entrapped the magicians themselves inside it.

Years went by, and the war with the Orcs continued. Convicts and prisoners were put into the barrier as a punishment. Life grew in the barrier and the land trapped inside got its own name, the Colony. Some said that a group of Orcs was trapped in the barrier as well.
The prisoners of the colony finally had their chance to rebel. And they did, taking over the colony. Gomez was the leader of this rebellion and became ruler of the Colony. The founded the "Old Camp," a large, castle-like camp. All the people of the colony lived here at the time.
King Rhobar was forced to make a deal with the prisoners inside the barrier. They were to send him the ore they collected in the mines, and he would send any supplies they need in return.

People of the colony grew tired of working for the king and left the Old Camp. They traveled until they found a spot to set up their own camp. They soon created the "New Camp" alongside a pond. They also found their own mine. They collected the ore and saved it, for they found that the ore contained magic in each piece. They had hopes that once they collected enough ore they’d be able to use the magic to destroy the barrier. Their leader was Lee, and they lived on rice, which they collected in fields by their camp.

Another group of people started worshipping a strange god, and entrusted it to save them from the barrier. They called it "the Sleeper." They also left the Old Camp and created their own in a swamp. They called it the "Sect Camp," or "The Brotherhood of the Sleeper." Their leader was Y’Berion and they relied on weed that they found in the swamp, which they sold to the other camps for ore.

The Colony now had three different camps, and had stood for over ten years. Hopes of destroying the barrier had vanished. No one was prepared to face the barrier, that is, until one day…
