RPG Vault has interviewed the ubiquitous Warren Spector and some other Ion Storm colleagues about Deus Ex: Invisible War. Here's a snippet:Jonric: What prompted you to move the time frame forward? How has the world changed, and what's still similar? And since Deus Ex had three different endings, how will Invisible War tie into any or all of them?
Sheldon Padotti: Going further into the future gave us freedom to break new ground. That was the initial impulse - to go forward and do something fresh rather than rehash what had come before. This worked well - Invisible War has its own distinct futuristic setting, further removed from the present day than Deus Ex, but as a result, more visibly shaped by time and technology. The social and technological issues come more into the foreground, and I think players will enjoy learning about a new place they have never explored. We lose a little bit of the frisson of a near-future real-world setting, but secret dealings still rule the day, and ultimately, the player gets the chance to complete the work that JC Denton began in the first game. |
