There are Oblivion impressions galore from all over, so we'll group a few in each newsbit. First, quite a lengthy article at GamingTrend (who also have a 17 minute podcast):Left clicking quickly, swings quickly depending on your skill and the weapon. Holding down the left mouse button, starts a power attack, but it automatically swings once it’s charged so you can’t hold it down and wait for the “right” moment to release. Right clicking blocks. Blocking uses fatigue, but you can hold down block. Blocking stops a percentage of the damage, sometimes all, sometimes none, so just holding the block key won’t work. Timing your blocks works much better and a successful block will stun your opponent leaving them open. Melee combat is partially skill based and partially twitch based. Your skills appear to determine damage and such, while your actions determine the actual hit. Ranged combat is done by equipping a ranged weapon and holding down the attack button. This draws your bow and if you hold it, uses up fatigue. Because of the physics, you will have to arc your shots for long range attacks. There is a sweet spot for cursor=hit, but you won’t always be there. If you are sneaking (ctrl-key) and not spotted, you get a sneak attack bonus modifier. I started off at 2x damage and eventually went to 3x. Next, a 4-page effort at PC.IGN:While talking to random people is fun, the easiest way to find quests is probably through the guilds. After joining the fighter's guild and taking on a quest, I headed out to deliver some weapons to a mine and then help the other fighters guild members there rid the mine of goblin troubles. This time, I was given a point on my map that I could walk to (or ride to in this case as I had already secured a horse) in order to reach the mine. Upon arrival, I delivered the goods and the other fighters went raging through the cavern. One, who cloaked himself at the beginning (a very cool effect) went raging a little too hard and got himself killed before I could save him. So much for the best reward again... Xbox360.IGN has a different preview:The game also gave me a brief tutorial of stealth mode, which is activated by clicking down on L3 (left joystick) and puts up an eye icon in the center of your screen. As long as the icon remained translucent, I was hidden. There's a cavern area in the Imperial Sewers where a few goblins mull around campfires. I snuck up behind one while stealthed, readied my bow and arrow and launched a sharp projectile at the back of his head. Upon impact, a message popped up at the top of the screen indicating I'd just done double damage with the sneak attack. The goblin tried to charge me afterwards, but I was able to kill him by quick-switching to my two-handed warhammer and crushing his nose. Interestingly, the Xbox360.IGN article agrees with others the PC version looked a little better. |
