Gamespy has the fith installment of the Etherlords Developer Diary online now. This time on Etherlords' system of resources, spells, and economics. It is once again written by Andrey Emelyanenko. Here's a small part:
The problem of a new resource system was not as easy to settle, although the solution that we finally came to very naturally arose from the new economy pattern that I told you about last week. Back in February 2001 in our system of resources you had banks that collected "taxes" from neighboring territories; with each upgrade the amount of dues would be growing. Money was spent on building construction and heroes' upkeep. As a result, your development strategy focused upon a narrow strip of terrain around your castle where you had a couple of banks, factories, labs, and mana collectors. The latter gave you magic energy that should have been spent on spell research and Rune production. The money flow grew steadily with each turn, and your best choice was to simply sit there and wait until you had enough resources to upgrade your spell-book to the limit. |
