What happend to Gilbert

what happend to gilbert the guy in the cave in gothic 1 found his note in gothic 2 any ideas.

Propably he exhaled his last breath on the Earthquake or gaurds arrest him while you was fighting undead shamans inside the temple or dragonsnappers eat him or he changed his name and he lives in rich as a Citizen at the upper quorter of Khorinis.Who knows maybe he is Lutero!
What the note says?I am going to fing it this night and see if I can come up with a most respectful explanation about him.

Go to were diego is in the Vom then klimb up you remember the cave there? if you try to go down a bit you'll find it
