| Bertelsmann Interested In Acquisition Of Electronic Arts? |

German Gamestar is <a href="http://www.gamestar.de/news/branchen/24249/" target="_blank">reporting</a> that Bertelsmann is interested in entering the gaming sector (according to the company's CEO Gunter Thielen who was apparently interviewed by a major German newspaper).

<br>It seems like the media giant is currently looking for a partner and/or targets for acquisition. It is rumored that Bertelsmann might even go as far as acquiring Electronic Arts.
<br>The article states that Electronic Arts seems like a likely target because of the licencing of sound tracks. The Bertelsmann Media Group (BMG), a division of Bertelsmann, could easily provide most licences.

<br>Bertelsmann has already attempted to enter the gaming business in the mid 90s when they created the Red Balloon label (that was working on a PC version of the Amiga classic 'Ambermoon'... the game was never finished though and Bertelsmann shut down all its gaming activities after a short time). It remains to be seen what exactly Bertelsmann is going to do this time around. An acquisition of EA would surely be quite spectacular. |

Would someone please explain what exactly is this Bertelsmann Corporation? And what exactly their area/s of business are. |

Bertelsmann is a big German company. I think they started out as a book publisher but now they are also selling music and are running a TV channel... In Germany they are also publishing kid's software, maybe they'll make EA their new label for selling Pooh Bear's Adventures 3 and Learning the Traffic Rules with Oscar the Penguin. lol |

I don't see why people are excited about this. One large company (that doesn't care about series which I do) being absorbed by an even larger company (that probably doesn't care about series which I do), does not strike me as a vast improvement.

I agree with Val, though I hardly doubt that anyone will manage to buy out EA. Some time ago it was rumoured that News Corp. was eyeing a games publisher buyout and they said something of the likes that EA was too big for its own good.
However, after I recently gathered what has happened to the C&C franchize under EA (more particularly how C&C 3 (known also as Tiberuim Dawn) and C&C Red Alert 3 (don't bother for the newly announced thing, I mean the previous one) and Renegade 2, I won't cry if anything bad happens to them. |

Itīs unlikely Bertelsmann will buy EA. Yes, they could afford them, but itīs too far off their core business to spend ~20 Bil. $.
