Thorben. You have to get Lehmar's ledger and give it to him, then he will teach you to pick locks. Or you can join the Theive's Guild and Ramirez will teach you then.

You can also ask Thorben if you've gotten his blessing and pay him 200 gold.

Still... picklocks won't work if you have low dexterity

@ Drakton
Sure it works, you just break a lot more lockpicks.

Lehman is the moneylender to the left of the path as you head toward the harbor district near the blacksmith's.

It's his book. The book contains a list of who owes him money. I think you have to beat him up to get it.

You must pickpocket Lehmar.I belive you don't have pickpocket skill, but there is another way to learn picklocking.
When Matteo gives you the quest to bring him the money that Gritta(thorben niece)owes him, go and talk to Gritta and pay her fee to Matteo. Then talk to her again and after that talk to Thorben. He will then teach you for 200 gold.

Hmmm... then I'm lost. When I try to open a chest, my char just kneels down and stays there and nothing happens. I've tried equipping the picklocks but nada. Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you use picklocks/picklock skill?

While you are knelt in front of chest, press the left and right arrow keys in a certain sequence for each chest and then it opens.

And if you are short on lock picks, save first! You can burn through quite a number if you are not careful (a trick I learned in G1 ... the hard way *grin*).

You can also write down the combinations and mark the places for the next time you'll play Gothic2
