Starlancer is great, but you fly mission by mission - no great Elite-like-Universe. Star Lancer is much more like Tie Fighter.

The best space sim (space rpg ?) so far is:

Independence War II - Edge of Chaos
http://www.edgeofchaos.net

great story, difficult to fly, super hard missions, free space, pure fun

The best space RPG game IMO is X: Beyond the Frontier

I've heard many people say that it is really similar to Elite mobygames.com calls it "A descendent of Elite", though I can't comment because I never played Elite.

I really recomend getting X though.

ACK NOT Fileplanet, *starts to look for another place to download IW:II demo*

i played the first part of X: Beyond The Frontier (not the expansion set), and yes it is similar to Elite 1 and Elite 2. I enjoyed it, but for me it was more a trading simulation in space than a real space sim, combat a bit too easy for my taste with space ships flying like WW2-air fighters, but all in all a good game.

Provis:

Is the Expansion Set like the original game?, if not what have changed ?

I never played X-tension, I actually only played X:BTF for about a month then I had to reformat my computer and, for some reason, never got around to reinstalling it.

*goes to look for his X cd*

I agree totally that Independence War II - Edge of Chaos is the BEST space rpg out there right now. Its graphics engine is superb. In fact, I have yet to see anything that compares except for the upcoming game MMORPG called EVE, which looks pretty complex. But for single player, i agree totally -- Edge of Chaos is killer.
