Mine won't even install - it says my OS is not suitable and it just won't proceed. I'm running WinXP and I've tried setting compatability modes for the installer, it doesn't help. Very annoying.

I've got a dual-boot with Win98, but it needs some serious tinkering before I can use it (it's a bit unhappy since I changed my motherboard recently) - I'll have a bash at that later and see if I can get BC3k running.

In the meantime, the official forum is probably the best place to look for tech support solutions. Someone there mentioned that an .ini file could be modified to stop the game asking for the CD.

[edit]: okay, I found out how to install it in XP: http://www.3000ad.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000694 - I tried the solution described in the first post and it worked just fine. XP users might also want to download VDMSound to run the game.

As for the CD check, whenever anyone asks about it on the 3000AD forums, Derek Smart flames them for not reading the readme file. The important bit of infomration in the readme seems to be that you have to install to a folder whose name is 8 characters or less (C:\games\BC3000AD is ok, C:\battlecruiser is not). The readme file is only accessible after you have installed the game, so another triumph of reason and logic for Derek.

Try renaming your folder to something with 8 letters or less, and if that doesn't work you'll have to reinstall. Alternatively, you could make a shortcut to the game and add /d1 to the end of the command line - that enables debug mode, which stops it checking for the CD. Not sure what else it does.[/b]

Donīt waste your time with the old BC games. The Universal Combat demo is out. The usual suspects should have it soon.
DS also wrote a detailed tutorial for the demo.

piln:
i installed in in d:\games\bc3000ad for the first time and it didn't work, so it must had been something other:) But i don't really care, because i don't like games running in DOS mode:(

Gorath:
I've read about Universal Combat and i was curious about it, until i see the system requirements:( I don't have a 1Ghz CPU (but i hope it'll be soon upgraded) and my VGA doens't have 1.1 vertes and pixel shader (and if i upgrade my CPU i won't have enough money for a VGA, but, if i upgrade my VGA, then i won't have enough money for a new CPU; that's an evil circle:) so i have to wait a lot before i can play with Universal Combat

Well, I'm having a bit of trouble with BC too, I got it installed but still can't get it to run. Seems like too much hassle in XP, but I might give it a go in another OS - when I can be bothered. Meanwhile I think I'll try out that UC demo too (sorry, ScOut3R, don't mean to rub it in! )

Anyone tried out the Universal Combat demo yet? I'd like to know what it's like but it won't run on my PC

It needed about 600MB of temp space (on my Windows drive), which I didn't have so I had to mess around moving files, and then it needed another 600MB on that drive to actually install the game, even though I was installing it onto my D:. Horrible! And then when I finally got it installed, it hung my machine when trying to start a game.

But I actually got BC3k working in WinXP. If anyone's interested, I enabled the /d1 and /v1 options and ran it with VDMS (after running the setup.exe, also with VDMS, to make the sound work). It needs slowing down, which can be done with the VDMS launcher, I think. Runs fine, and it actually looks better graphically than I thought it would for such an old game. Haven't got a clue what I'm doing yet, but it certainly looks interesting.

Yes...but my opinion doesn't count for much at this point. For some reason I never played any of the BC games (in part because Derek Smart annoys the heck out of me - childish, I know). So, without any background it's confusing as hell with a non-standard approach to everything. I haven't had the time to really study it so I'll report back after this weekend.

Independence War 2 was really good with a few downfalls. I really wish they would make an I War 3 and add all the goodies I wanted to see. The things I liked about I War 2 were flying ships, fighting for the most part, systems, upgrades, the scenery. What I didn't like was the linearity. The lack of non-linear upgrades. The lack of more ship options. The lack of interactive inhabitants. This game verged on being brilliant. If they could have expanded it more, made it less linear. Made the world feel more alive it would have been awesome. It's depressing to think of the game engine rotting in some greedy companies archive when someone could be building a great game on it!

Well, I recently had a reinstall and a change of graphics card, so decided it was worth giving a second go. And it worked! Freespace 2 really is an excellent, excellent game. I installed it on Friday morning on the off-chance it might work, and ended up loving it. I finished it on Sunday morning at about 2am.

A very puzzling plot though. Lots of things happened that didn't make any sense and I never heard about again, one entire sub-plot just fizzled out, and the ending left more questions than answers. However, I think that must have been rather the intention, and it was a good ride while it lasted. Now if only there were a trading addon, and a persistent universe...

At the risk of sounding like a total cheapskate, I noticed that Privateer 2 is now freely downloadable from Underdogs too, as is Privateer and its expansion pack. Not exactly what ScOut3R was asking for, but still good games worth a look. Although I have the feeling P2 will be stripped of its movie scenes.

I bought Privateer 2 as soon as I was able to, which unfortunately was some time after release. You're likely to find it runs way too fast on any machine you try - it was unplayable on my 700MHz desktop.

Grrrr! Damn those speeding old games! That's the same reason I haven't been able to play Ultima 7 yet

A slowdown util might do the trick... I tried some DOS-based, but still couldn't get U7 to run slow enough, even on the minimum settings! But I know there's a new(ish) remake of U7 (including all the add-ons) that supposedly runs in just about anything, and is complete and fully playable. Will have to check it out (if I can remember the name ).

I had better luck with windows-based slowdown tools. Might work for Privateer2 and BC3k (yep, it runs way too fast for me in WinXP)... I have some backed up somewhere on one of my CDs full of Underdogs games that I'll probably never play. Will post more info here if I can find 'em....
