Wow, most people want a more lax crime system. Although personally i agree with you.

I want to see more mini quests and cool details like we had in fallout and fallout 2.

I just want a real role playing game, not an expensive graphics demo. Think my wish will come true..?

Mattias - this was meant to be a thread with constructive critizism, not polemical whining. Thanks.

A real roleplaying game offers you a challenge from the beginning to the bitter end. You usually start with a small, weak character and work your way up to become increasingly more powerful and in the end the game usually gives you a feeling of accomplishment (either by power, gold, girls.. anything)

Morrowind fails in this category because it only offers you a (small) challenge in the beginning. If you reach level 20+ you're gonna be able to beat up ANYTHING the game throws at you.

A real roleplaying game also offers you a mental challenge. This can be done in several different ways. Puzzles, mazes, riddles and special procedures (like pulling 3 levers in the right sequence) are among the most common mental challenges most games have to offer.

Morrowind fails HORRIBLY in this category since there is no real interaction with the gameworld. There are NO puzzles of any kind (!) needed to be done to complete the game. NONE, and this is remarkable. I have not found a single maze so far, although I haven't had time to enter every little dungeon. But I have seen appr. 150-200 of them and nope, no mazes. Riddles are also missing, unless you want to look at some of the books as riddles.

A real roleplaying game usually offers you an interactive world too. A believable interactive world, with a day and night cycle, living, moving non player characters, AI in the mobiles (monsters/persons you meet), a nice weather system, interesting in game characters plus lots of other stuff.

In my opinion Morrowind fails in this category too. The world is large and.. dull.. with the same textures used from north to south, from east to west. The npc's are under all criticism, I won't even begin to describe them. The day and night cycle is missing. The mobiles are static. The AI is so dumb it really should be called AD (Artificial Dumbness) (I've actually seen monsters get stuck on ONE lousy stalagtite standing alone in an otherwise empty dungeon) The characters you meet are all "dead". You can see them standing in the same spot 24/7 all year long. Even if they've told you they "had to go perform a play" (as an example). Morrowind doesn't have a physics system either. If you drop an item in the steepest hill you find, for example a pearl (round) it will always stay there. The floating barrels aren't really floating. They are animated ordinary barrels and will NEVER float away, not even if you kick them (which you can't cause the game doesn't let you tamper with things). You can actually get stuck on a floating plank in the middle of a canal (Been there, done that). The weather.. Forget about trying to seek shelter from the rain! Morrowind's super rain will rain through wood, stone, steel, you name it. Only way to avoid it is to enter a building (which is when another section loads and the weather system is completely removed). You NEVER hear rain on the roof or the wind howling outside. Not even when you're in a tent.

What Morrowind has is a great character system. But that isn't enough to make it qualify as a real roleplaying game, IN MY OPINION.

Let me quote Desslock, one of the most respected journalists for games on the net:

quote:
Bethesda made no attempt to "protect players from themselves", and I think that's appropriate - let players powergame through if they elect to do so. There are plenty of "sanctioned" methods of essentially becoming invincible, by creating god-like enchanted items or spells using the completely customizable in-game enchanting and spellmaking systems.

I think you would have needed protection from yourself, Mattias. I can only tell you that my lvl 37 character STILL finds challenges, and it's still interesting for me to develop his skills.

Just one more correction:

quote:
The mobiles are static

No. They aren't. They are in fact less static than in any other RPG so far.

Ok, explain this to me since I've been chased from one end of the world to the other by a gang of angry orcs in Gothic..

Give me an example of when they're not static? Remember, mobiles is a term used for both npc's and monsters.

I have not used a single item not provided by the game. I haven't used any self-made objects. My character is level 31 now and I haven't died since around level 20 or so. If you have a level 37 character and you're still finding challenges.. Well, that just tells me a lot about how good you are at playing this game

Protect from myself.. Yeah, of course I could strip him naked and fight with my bare hands. I am sure I would find a challenge then. But is that really how it should be? I am always hunting for better and better equipment and OF COURSE I'm gonna use the best equipment availible to me. If the game has been balanced good by the development crew there won't be a problem. If they've done a bad job you get Morrowind.

But this is really funny to me.. You can't even admit to yourself that the game is unbalanced! Oh well. (Even Bethesda is admitting to the balancing problem by including a difficulty setting in the patch.. or so I hear)

But I agree on the "still interesting to develop his skills" part. That's what I am doing to my character too right now. I am trying to learn the enchant and alchemy skills. I love the character development system in Morrowind!

I gladly admit that playing the game with a redguard fighter is easy. Is it unbalanced then? No, not to me. I expect a fighter to slaughter each and everything. But then do the third quest from the mage in Ald'Ruhn with this char - no easy way to do that then.

I am looking forward to the difficulty setting in the patch. It will ease the pain of players who think that not dying since level 20 makes a game too easy. I am none of those. Actually, my current character hasn't died since level 2 - and I don't find the game easy, still.[/quote]

Then you're a better Morrowinder than I am. But I play the "headfirst" style. Rush in fast, hit anything that moves and when the smoke clears see who is still standing.

This is an honest questin, Rendelius: What did you mean when you said that the mobiles in Morrowind are less static than in any other RPG?

Is my copy of Morrowind buggy 'cause they're all just standing there.. (except the cliff racers who swarm around me like flies around a roadkill)

It seems your copy is buggy.

Most NPC's wander in a certain vicinity.
Most critters chase you.

I really don't get your point.

Once again: do you really think you are in charge to end discussions here?

Just one way: You can end them by leaving.
