Gothic 2: Review @ GameBanshee |
|
GameBanshee has gotten around to reviewing Piranha Bytes' 'Gothic II'. The score is 8.4/10 and here's a snippet:
In the computer gaming industry there are many games that go largely unnoticed - the games that do not generate the hype and anticipation to rival summer blockbuster movies. In many ways, such games are highly underrated and do not generate the publicity of the major titles, but serve an important role in the gaming industry. Gothic II is such a game. It is not a game that will dazzle you with the latest graphics or exhaust you with two hundred hours of play time. It is a game which will provide its player with a solid RPG experience with a developing story that has spanned two full titles.
|

IMHO, it's bad style comparing the graphics of an RPG from 2002 with one from 2004. |

I think the review was fair and truthful.
Seriously no need to freak out everytime if gothic 2 doesn't get that magic 9.0 mark.Try to remember that the game is quite old now.So it is quite obvious that the perspective, where he is looking at gothic 2 is a bit different than what it was when gothic 2 was released. _________________ The focused mind can pierce through stone |

I don't "freak out". But I think the review shows lack of objectivity.
Personally, I prefer tests without any scores, percents, points, stars or whatsoever. |

Well i was not particularly pointing on your direction Hindukönig. It was merely a general obserbvation of mine how people usually react this sort of things .Seriously the marginal beetveen 8.4 and 9.0 is so low, that people who make buying decisions based solely on scores are dumb.Scores are meaningless! I make my decisions by READING the text.
I just don't get why do we need any scores.IF reviews must use some sort of perverted scoring, just use five stars and no separete scores for craphics etc.
like this:
* = crap
** = medicore game. Does not shine, but won't smell either
*** = A good solid piece of entertaiment
**** = bloody excellent
***** = an instant classic _________________ The focused mind can pierce through stone |

i think if there should be a score on anything its on how many times a game is worth replaying ..
take a more or less old game like half-life ..
its won alot of awards and is a pretty cool game the first time you play it if you like a bit of a challange for the mind
but when your done .. do you really wanna play it again ? you already know how to get past everything
but then theres to gothic games .. i cant count the times i've played gothic one anymore .. and not two of thoses games where the same
and the same goes for G2 and hopefully G3
( yes i know half-life and gothic has nothing to do whit eachother what so ever .. it was just an exsample ) _________________ Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtsy,

This a very favourable review.
The graphics weren't that great even for the time I very distinctly remember.
Unlike many rpgdot viewers this review is refreshingly objective. Personally, I think the game is overrated.

Replayability is a nice element to a game but a game shouldn't have its value lowered if it was enjoyable and only meant to be played once. |

Overrated? Really?
But Gothic 2 is more of an underdog! Not many people knew about it or it's predecessor...
Personally, i found the game awesome. It's environments and NPCs were very detailed and lively. The ability to complete many quests in different ways really added to it's replayability.
Of course, all of this is just my opinion |

You must also bare in mind that the game is originally German. Gothic 1 and 2 have been released in Germany much easier and I think the game is better in German language. The speakers seem more professional and the athmosphere is deeper. |

Both gothic 1 and gothic 2 have been plagued by a bad international release. I never knew when the original gothic 1 had been released until I found a box in the budget department after having played the english demo for gothic 1 a year before my discovery. I never once saw or heared an advertisement for Gothic 1.
Then I found out gothic 2 was in the make and I was thrilled. At first I thought it would have been a good thing that a big international company like Atari wanted to distribute it in the international market but then there were no advertisements and Atari got some financial problems resulting in downsizing the releases of third party products which successfully reduced our chances of getting the addon through Atari. Our only hope lies with Jowood concerning the expansion.
Both gothic games were underrated and underadvertised and to be honest, that is a big shame. The games may not have been graphically the best but I prefer a game with excellent gameplay over a game with excellent graphics any time.
I hope that the newly released versions of gothic 2 result in a major interest boost which results in somebody realizing they should release the english version of the addon.
