I noticed in Gothic that there were no wandering monsters(at least none that I noticed). There were wandering npc's however. I was always hoping that when I was out at night in the countryside, rummaging through my inventory looking for food that maybe something would sneak up on me and scare the @3!%& out of me(like maybe a stealthy skeleton trying to stab me in the back or something), but sadly it never happened. Actually, some things did sneak up on me like that, but only because I was near enough to their stationary spot to attract their attention.
I hope that in Gothic 2, there will be times a wandering monster will sneak up on you.

I wish there were roaming creatures...
I wish creatures respawned more than once a chapter...
And I wish there was a way to camp out in the wild. Make a fire, roast some scavenger, smoke an L or two...

Well, there was that abandoned camp out on the edge of the orc lands, complete with fire, cauldron, and some beds inside a nearby cave. There was no frying pan though, so you could not cook food there, as far as I know. I spent many a night in there. That's where Milten ends up later in the game. For some reason though, he would not talk to me when I found him there.

heheh, congratulations, Hulk, you found the foursome meeting place First time I saw it, I thought it was where Ur-Shak was hangin' out, till I saw Milten standing there once. (Not sure what triggers him to relocate there.)

Actually, Milten goes there right after 'his' focus quest.

I followed him when I did it the first time around because I was so afraid of all those orcs and orcdogs, and he looked like a guy who'd protect me . Well, he did, but my luck finally left me when he walked straight to the camping place to stay there, and I had to run back the rest of the way home with a host of mad puppies on my heels. The gate guards saved my butt then.

You mentioning the gate guards reminded me of what happened to them in my game. They were the first npc's to die. That really helped me get ahead in chapter 1, before I knew about money cheats and things like that.

Ah, I became rich early by studying lockpicking at the Fingers Academy for the Unseen Arts. Not killing people is one thing; not stealing everything they own something completely different, and Fingers looked too much like the early Garrett prototype for me to resist his charms .

I once saw a Bloodfly and a Wolf fighting each other. Then a Scavenger joined them. I'm not sure who would have won had I not interfered.

I think a few monsters that can outrun you would be a good idea too. Snappers and Razors are the only ones I can think of.

Yeah! It's weird how the NPC's can run so much faster than you. They run like the hero with a velocity potion thingy.

I agree that more enemies that run faster than you would add another tactical element to your thinking. This does mean the player should have more of a chance to avoid things though, which then implies a higher draw distance for monsters etc.

I've modified the camera & graphics systems slightly for the mod I'm working on, to show more of the landscape and more of what's going on within in. This looks great, but does let you see some of those AI shortcomings that previously happened outside camera range...
