A few questions about Armor? |
|
I'm a little confused about the armor ratings, which is better low or high numbers.
I'm assuming that the lower the armor rating the better the protection like most RPGs but I notice in many cases the lower numbered armor costs less then some of the armor with higher rating numbers.
Some times it's the other way around.
What’s the deal?

The higher the armor rating, the more effective the armor is. Even the sparse manual that came with the game indicates this. |

And the "less is more" armor class system is strictly a D&D affair, barring very blatant clones. Also, it's pretty counterintuitive and I think they changed it for 3rd ed or whatever.
However, you might get confused in Morrowind for this reason: when you look at a piece of armor, it shows you an adjusted armor value. Adjusted for what, you ask? Why your skill of course. If you start with light armor as a major and say heavy as misc, you might think that a leather piece has a nice high ac of 10 while steel plate is all ac:1. This is not he case, but ac:1 is all you get if you have a hvy armor skill of like 5. As your skill raises, so do the ac's of the armor pieces you look at.
Hope this helps. |

So you're saying that at this point in the game I should go for the...
Chitin Shield
Rating 5
wt.4
value 22.
Not the
Steel Shield
Rating 2
wt.15
value 68.
Well that makes a little more sense. I guess.

If your good with light don't touch the heavy... your going to be much better protected in light. |

Although, wearing hvy and getting knocked around alot will increase your hvy armor skill, and enough of that will give you a juicy bonus to your End when lvl time comes. And we all like more hp... |

some armor notes:
If you wear pieces of multiple types of armor, both skills with go up proportionally.
There are always some hits to unarmored even if you are wearing a full suit of armor/helmet. You can hear the difference when a monster hits you and it has bypassed armor, there is no "clank" in the sound. I think the ratio is like 5 to 1 armor hits to unarmored, but it is random.
The pieces of armor that grant the worst weight to protection ratio are the paldrons (shoulder pieces) and the greaves (upper legs). Lose these pieces or substitute lighter types and save substantial weight, while your protection goes down marginally. |

Frustrating armor bug...
I found some chain armor in a shop in Pelwhatever and was really happy. It had a rating of 12 much better then anything else I had found for my character and rated medium, not too heavy. I'm getting tired of throwing stuff away because I'm always over weight.
The only problem was that every time I tried to equip it the game dropped out to the desk top. I finally gave up and went on with out it.
I've only been playing for a short time, day 4 game time; my character has a armor rating of 7. That chain armor would have really helped.

I have Heavy as a Major skill and it's boosted to 45 or so. I noticed that as you get better with an armour, you can move faster in it. Up your strength when you level-up if you plan on using a lot of heavy armour. With a strength of 80 I can carry over 400 and my Imperial Steel and Silver Armour only take up 150 or so.
I am in search of some Dremer Heavy armour right now. High rating and a bit less weight. Happend across some Orcish Medium armour after I killed a few orcs up north, that stuff is worth a lot(a lot compared to any early armour anyways, 400 for the boots alone). Anyone know where to find full or even partial Dwemer armour?
Edit: I also had that armour bug, I only tried it once since I remembered someone else saying something about it. |
