What is a stronghold?
   

Ive heard of these "strongholds" but i dont know what and the heck they are

It's a really general term. It just means 'fort' or 'big fortification-like building'. For example, a Dunmer stronghold is a big rounded rectangle with buildings protruding from the top (there's one to the east of Caldera). A Telvanni stronghold probably looks stupid.

Not that Fireteddys answer wasn't good enough, but just because I can:

strong·hold
n.

1) A fortified place or a fortress.
2) A place of survival or refuge: one of the last strongholds of an age-old tradition.
3) An area dominated or occupied by a special group or distinguished by a special quality: a feminist stronghold; a stronghold of democracy.
