| Hammer & Sickle: Preview @ GameSpy |
|
First one, then another...GameSpy has posted a preview of 'Hammer & Sickle':
I was in college when the Berlin Wall came down. At the time I asked my father, who's a big fan of spy stories, whether the fact that the Soviet Union no longer existed would kill the genre. He just laughed, "Give it 20 years," he said, "and Soviet/American espionage will make a big comeback as period pieces. After all, we still haven't run out of stories to tell about World War II." Well, I'm certainly hoping my Dad's prophecy comes true, and that Nival Interactive's Hammer & Sickle is the beginning of that trend, because there are lots of Cold War stories left to be told.
Interestingly, GameSpy's "Iffy" entry is "Nival's track record with RPGs isn't that great" - what do you think? |

I think he is right and wrong (but more because he has no taste than that he knows what he's talking about imo), the only rpg that nival has made has been Evil Island. That is a good game in my opinion. SS and SSS are not rpgs, but are great games, especially the s3 expansion. SS (and S3) is a little too easy even with difficulty mods, but still a great game that any TB fan will probably rank high in their list of games. And is still a hundred times more difficult than the what could have been a great game if it was TB, ufo:aftermath, but was RT so it stunk.
I haven't played any of their hybrid games so I have no opinion on them (rage of mages and etherlords).
But I also believe Nival is the future of good rpgs, since I like TB and I think Night Watch looks like it will be a great game. The only fancy graphic TB rpg I know about at least. I want to buy four copies to help do my share in furthering the TB rpg market.
Hammer and Sickle looks like a hybrid more TBS than rpg, but it also looks fantastic and if I was Michael Jackson and it was a little boy I would want to molest it.
All in all I say God bless Nival for being the only devs with enough taste and balls to make a new fancy graphic TB rpg. Nival is the elite, elan leader in today's rediclous rpg genre market. No one can hold a candle to them. Their sole competitor in the running for the leader of the rpg genre was Trokia, but they are no more so Nival wins no contest. Real rpg fans can only hope that the trokia devs apply and get hired at nival. Nival is the greatest and like Luke Skywalker is our only hope.

lol! well i was going to say that it originally started out as a mod for SS but then Nival helped them make it into a full game... but i would obviously be wrong! _________________ Dak’kon: "Your reasons for your incessant clicking are not *known* to me."

Really? Thats very interesting.Do you mean expansion? Or was it really just a mod? Was it going to be a free mod?
Did you play s3? It added a lot to the game such as looting being useful, etc.
Pure TBS games like ss do get a little boring if you have nothing else to do but go on another mission and then another and thats it. x-com had base building and budgets, etc. JA had areas to defend and budgets, etc. SS had nothing besides missions.
S3 added some to it but H&S looks like it will have it all and then some.
I'm kind of glad they went from expansion to full blown game, because hopefully it will be bigger and better and they make a lot of money and then saturate the market with games based off of the ss engine. Hopefully more rpgs like the next big rpg blockbuster Night Watch. I can't wait to see the movie either. |

I believe it started as a mod by an independent team, i guess Nival saw the potential and decided to help out... i think they have more of a producer role but i'm sure it goes beyond that.
