Well now Edda,
1. I am unsure about when yoy say "loading times 35 sec's"
2. also when you say "the card should fit also to the size of the ram"?
Would have to know your motherboard ? (because of No.2)
I personally would try to run Prince of Persia first before thinking about
upgrading the graphics, then you can evaluate the situation. it could be
better than you think (because of No.1) _________________ Forever aches my wretched soul, for Chromanin locked in that dark hole, though crypted key i've yet to learn, he knows one day i will return. |

Hello Wulf,
thank you for your answer. With loading time 35 sec I want to describe the loading time when I start playing – for example today - and I load the last safe from yesterday. But when was playing for some time, and the hero is no more alive, and then I load again, then the loading time is 15 – 17 sec.
The matter with the size of the ram and the size of the graphics card: I read (maybe it is not right), that when the ram has for example 512 MB and the graphics card has 256 MB the system will work slower. But as I said, I really don’t know much about hardware, and what I read is perhaps not true.
Up to know I didn’t dare to buy The Prínce of Persia (I held it many times in my hands), because it is written on the envelope, that the game don’t work with Geforce MX-cards. I read also in PC Games 1/2004 that the game is not playable with graphics cards from the Geforce-4-MX-series. Is that maybe not true?
If a new graphics card is necessary: is my PC strong enough for a very good graphics card? When you think so, I would safe some gold and invest it in a top-card.
I’m really grateful, that a computer amateur like me gets such detailed replies! |

GeForce 4MX cards are basically GeForce 2, architecture-wise. Many newer games won't work with those old cards, so you'd better heed the warning. _________________ Jaz |

You can download the PoP demo if you want to try it.
The size of RAM thing is complete nonsense. What counts arethe exact chip and chip and RAM speed.

These two cards are a good point to start. The ATI is a bit more attractiveIMO because it comes with Half Life 2 bundled and has probably slightly better backward compatibility for older games.
The manufacturer is not that important. Others offer cards with the same chip and specifications. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Hey there Hedda,
Jaz & Gorath have more or less concluded this issue, but i would be cautious
regarding your motherboard (which i never found out which?)
The issue regarding the RAM is signifcant, i have deduced from your info that
it is of an older architecture where some of the video ram is "allocated" to the
graphics, - - known as an aperture window and is ajusted in the bios.
Good luck with your choice,
Till we meet again (on the forums) _________________ Forever aches my wretched soul, for Chromanin locked in that dark hole, though crypted key i've yet to learn, he knows one day i will return. |

Hi, Wulf, Gorath, Jaz, thanks again for the technical support. I promise now: before I make any more statements about my PC, I’ll ask my work-mates from the technical department to teach me a bit. I think it is better, when I know, what I’m talking about. (It is my first own PC, I’ve chosen it alone, and I bought it for Gothic !!! I’m so happy, that the PC is working up to now so satisfactory).
Have a nice day! Adanos bless you! |

Wulf basicly wants to know if you have a graphics _card_ or only a chip on your mainboard.
As I understand you have a GeForce 4 MX card. In this case replacing it with a new card is probably no big deal. A mainboard which supports an XP 2600+ can´t be that old. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Hi, thanks again for the reply (makes me break my promise - but I got already a lesson from a work-mate).
When I’m looking into my system (Geräte-Manager) to check the hardware, I find the above mentioned „Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440SE with AGP 8x“, so that‘s my (stinking) graphics card and I can replace it by another one. What I have „on board“ the the soundcard (Realtek AC’97 audio for VIA). The only thing I wasn‘t sure about, is the speed of my RAM. This „333“ is what I kept in mind, but I couldn‘t find it written somewhere. But the RAM is for sure 512 MB and DDR, and the processor is for sure AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 2.08 GHz, as mentioned.
I have the Radeon already in mind, thanks for the tip!

@Hi, Daedalus
I've just checked this thread again, and I saw, that I forgot to thank you for your tip, which is going in the same direction like Gorath's. Sorry for that!
