looking for rpg suggestions

I am an old fan of the SSI gold box series. What I am looking for is simple. A solid AD&D type game, with turn based, strategic battles. Much like the ones that the old SSI games have. It seems to me that most newer RPG's use real time battles. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

The Baldur's Gate series is what you're looking for. Fallout comes to mind as well. NWN to a certain extent... Newer games like Divine Divinity might appeal to you, not sure.

The Might and Magic series is excellent if you're not a graphics fanatic (except for the most recent, MM9). Wizardry8 also captured that "old-school" feel extremely well.

I thought BG and NWN used real time battles? I have IWD2 and can't stand the battles. It feels like a 6 man version of Diablo (an incredibly boring and monotonous game IMHO).

In Baldurs Gate you press <spacebar> and it pauses the battle so that you can issue orders. I am also a fan of the old classic AD&D games, but there is nothing around like them that I know of. But Baldurs Gate and BG2 are the closest thing. You could also try out Wizardry 8, although it doesnt have the tactical aspects of battle that we would have seen in the old Pool of Radiance-type games because its all in 3-d now. BG1 and BG2, taken together with all the expansion packs, is like 400+ hours of playtime. Really good games. Hope this helps

Personally, I'd just skip BG1 and go straight for BG2.

Skip them both. The party management is so damned tedious.

I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode. I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."

Party management is what makes it fun

You can set the feedback options to automatically pause at the end of each round to simulate turn-based.

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor (did I get that right?) is the only recent true turn-based D&D licensed product and it's even made by SSI...but you'll regret it...

All RPG's have character management, not all have PARTY management.

Edit:
Fixed a really silly error.
