Mythica: Cancellation Interview @ GameSpy

GameSpy has <a href="http://www.gamespy.com/interviews/february04/mythica/" target="_blank">interviewed</a> Microsoft product manager Chris Lye about the cancellation of the company's Norse mythology themed MMORPG 'Mythica' (<a href="http://www.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10077&newsid=25694">story</a>). <blockquote><em><strong>GameSpy</strong>: The official site mentioned that Mythica was being cancelled "after careful evaluation of the MMORPG landscape." Go into more detail about how that influenced the decision. <br> <br><strong>Chris Lye</strong>: The massively multiplayer genre is a hugely crowded and competitive space. We didn't want to spread ourselves out over multiple MMORPG projects. We analyzed all the projects in the works and decided Mythica was the one to go. This wasn't about Mythica specifically. There were a lot of good things about the game. But, we had to make hard decisions about where we placed our assets.</em></blockquote>

lies

Anyone in the game industry will tell you they are lying. At some point in the developement the devs realized that the concept of the game was impossible due to technical issues.

I agree with you there, they probably found the game wasn't coming together the way they hoped and they knew enough about the MMORPG world to know a mediocre MMORPG would lose them money (and an overly hyped mediocre MMORPG would be very bad PR).

My personal favorite quote though is this,

"The entire team has been invited to explore other opportunities at Microsoft Game Studios and also Microsoft. All of the positions on Mythica have been eliminated, but we want to retain as much of the team as possible at Microsoft. "

Translation: "we fired them all but they can look through the want ads and apply to new Microsoft jobs if they want, just like everyone else."
