Someone mentioned in passing that it was possible, but I'm not entirely certain how.

How are these advancements determined? By attaining a level? I thought it was by completing quests (i.e., Diego's test of faith and level 5 to get Shadow, Rogue or Novice, then the Minecrawler Nest quest to get Guard, Mercenary, Templar, or Fire Mage, then the Artifacts quest to get from Fire Mage or Mercenary to Water Mage (haven't explored the other stories, so I don't know about those).

It would be cool to get my hands on a two handed weapon earlier in the game, but I still want to become a Fire Mage and I'd prefer to start out by joining the Old Camp.

Any thoughts?

That's not possible. You go Shadow -> Guard or Fire Mage -> Merc -> Water Mage

Guard!
If you have joined the Old City, you can now report to Thorus to be
promoted as a guard. As a guard you can get a updated armor from Stone,
Learn 2-handed combat from Thorus, Crossbow from Scorpio
and buy things from Skip.
Ask if you can become a fire mage first, then end the conversation.
Now go straight to Coristo, the head fire mage, and talk to him.
(If you became a guard before speaking to Coristo, you will never get
the option to become a fire mage!) Say you want to be a fire mage,
take his test, then let him go up the stairs, and DON'T follow.
Go back to Torus _now_ and say you want to be a guard.
Get your guard armour, train whatever guard skills you want (like crossbows)...
No you can change your mind any time you wish and still become a fire mage!
(go back to Coristo on the upper floor with the pentagram to become a Fire Mage)

(Thanks to Moralin for the in-depth description of this procedure).

Fire Mage!
See the information about Guard above to get the advantages of being
a guard even if you become a fire-mage.
You may also request to become a Fire Mage, then you will meet
Corristo that will take your oath of becoming a Fire Mage.
I hope you have saved loads of experience by now, buy as many
circles you can (preferably all four (70 points)).
Buy all the runes you can from Torrez (Old Camp), Cronos (New Camp)
and Baal Cadar (Sect Camp). You can probably buy about 10 in Mana
now if you have skillpoints left, but then its time to start saving
again, becouse we need another 30 points for the next circle and then
another 40 for the next circle beyond that. From now on you may
learn Mana from Corristo and access the Temple, so go ahead and rob
the chests on the first floor. Heheheheh....

It's only possible when you choose to be a guard/fire mage! Then you need to go to the Fire Mage-Leader (don't know it's name) and give the right answer. He tells you to follow him up, but don't do this. Now go to Thorus and tell him you want to be a guard. Now you're a guard. When you now want to be a Fire Mage, go to the Fire-leader and go up in the house where he's standing now. Then complete the talking and you're a Fire Mage. Then, in chapter 4 or 5 you're kicked from the Old Camp. Now go to the New Camp. Become a mercenary at Lee and then become a Water Mage at Corristo! Pffff...

No, it is possible if you tell Corristo you want to join, but then you don't go up - join the guards, and then you go up. That way you will be a guard before you become a Fire Magician, but I don't see the point.

Don't worry Ryan, it's the internet.

It is kinda pointless -- the only real interest I had with it was to get my hands on two-handed weapon training earlier in the game and still be able to cast spells without using scrolls...
