Puzzle Canal, question **spoiler**
   

ok, got to center of puzzle canal, first shrine with tip...no problem. but now...
how do I get into the room with smoky entrance above??

just about tried everthing, need this to complete me pilgrimage. thankee

You have to drown yourself in the water; as soon as your breath bar and then your health bar go to zero, there's a brief flash, and then you revive with full health. You'll then see a bridge over the room with the barrier.

Just to be sure, I drowned near one of the flights of steps, so that I could emerge quickly after I passed out.
