If you want to become a guard, you must do a lot things (quests). I will not name them all here.
But generaly:
you must impress important people in Old camp (walk around and speak with everybody with specific name - they will give you some quests and if you make them, they will speak about you with Diego).
After every quest you can speak with Diego (he will tell you what more you need to do to become a member of Old Camp).
If you impress Diego enough, he will speak about you with Thorus and you become one of shadows (not Guard).
Then Gomez (or his right hand) will give you several quests (they will send you to Sect camp). And after while, when you will show to them some progress in this quests, Thorus will ask you if you want to be Guard (or Firemage).
