Novice Level ?
   

Do you miss anything if you play at novice level?

Are the other levels (except novice) equal regarding the rewards (xpoints-items etc).

I did try it once. I had already been all the way through the sea caves once before, and was getting frustrated trying to get back to the Bayjin Shallows. (Did the autolever toughen the psi-sharks in a way I couldn't see by right clicking on them?) So I turned it down the setting to novice temporarily, and got through easier. My findings were:
1) XP are the same
2) Monsters are easier to hit and less resistant to spells
3) Monster attacks do less damage (this may be a function of defensive spells being more effective - I don't know if this is true without defensive magic up)
4) I suspect that most items you find are the same as they are preset by the game in terms of where they are. For random encounters, I have no way of knowing. I suspect your characters' search ability will also be better on novice, but again I don't know

From the handy-dandy manual-

"The main thing the difficulty level does is affect how hard it is to damage the monsters."........"Difficulty level also affects the number of hints and clues you get and the difficulty of locks and traps. It also has a minor effect on the number of monsters you encounter."

I really like this kind of difficulty levels. It is really interesting and very few games use it, but very good idea.

Do you think the hints and clues referred to are based on conversations with NPCs? I do, and I have thoughts on it.

I think if it's a matter what an NPC volunteers (at novice level they volunteer more, and harder levels less) and the hints can still be pulled out of the NPC by asking the right question - this is very good. If the clues aren't available at all, then I'm not so happy. A "tough" puzzle may be obvious to me , and I might have difficulty with an "easy" one . I may need a hint from the game. To me, there was only one significant challenge in the whole monastery (the key to the safe-the automap tipped me off to where, but I still had trouble pulling it together because of my tendency to overclick), but other people have posted threads asking for help elsewhere there - so clearly it's in the Eye Of The Beholder . The perfect example for me is the riddle asked by Milo Calzone - unless you're just trying every answer, I don't see how (on normal level) you know what to reply to him.

If it's not in the conversations like I speculated, where do you think these hints are?

I've always played on "normal", but I've noticed a few things. I remember one time when Burz said something along the lines of "Don't you want to know about ..... " Likewise, some NPCs go thru a little speech before you get a chance to talk and that would put new keywords into your list. I imagine that has something to do with the hint difficulty. On the other hand (brief pause for manual check)... Nope, I'm full of it. The keyword addition is controlled by the simplified NPC interaction setting. Guess I don't have a clue after all...
