Might and Magic series: going to ubisoft.

In the bottom part of that article, it says that Ubisoft has bought the M&M and HOMM series. What do tou think will happen to the M&M games?
As for me, I'm just hoping that they don't turn it into an MMORPG.

I like M&M games very much. VI-VII-VII are my favorite, with VI on the top of the list. I played M&M IX (although not finished it yet) and found it quite playable. It's hard not to agree with all the minuses reviews usually find in M&M IX, but I still liked it, maybe because the magic of the series. I really hope to see M&M X. I want it to be great CRPG, I want it to return in all the glory of The Mandate of Heaven. I want people to discuss it as much as they discuss Gothic and Morrowind these days. M&M world really deserves it. Generally I like Ubisoft and I hope that they have some plans to develop series further on.

I'm not quite so confident of Ubisoft but they'd be mad to pay $1.3M and then not use the series to full effect...so fingers crossed they do just that!

I agree

I just hope they don't focus on the Heroes series and forget how great the Might and Magic CRPG series has been over the years. You can bet we'll be seeing a Heroes of Might and Magic game before we see any CRPG, which is ironic because the CRPG side of the franchise has been around since the beginning of computer gaming, with the strategy games being relatively new.

Jon Van Canegham is the guy who has worked on the CRPG's from day one, his company being New World Computing, which sold out to 3DO years ago.

In any case, if Ubi Soft has any common sense, they'll contact Canegham and allow NWC to develop the CRPG side of the franchise, and allow him the time to do it right, instead of rushing games out the door, ala 3DO and Might and Magic IX. Canegham knows the series and his company should be allowed to continue it's development, IMHO.

Well said SM, I agree with you completely. I played M&M1 and followed with the rest, soI've enjoyed many many hours with the series. I too enjoyed IX, though it really looked unfinished and rushed out the door to make a little money quickly. I wait in hopeful expectation.

You know what, though - it probably just means that we're going to see "Might and Magic Online" in a few years. Might and Magic Online will be a strictly by-the-numbers, average online RPG and will promptly be forgotten (sigh).

Northchild: You're right, we probably will see a Might and Magic on-line game. There are WAY too many of those stupid MMORPG's, and they're all basically the same.

Right now, the smart game designers are putting all their efforts into single-player games or single-player games with free online play.
Hopefully UBI soft will have the common sense to re-establish the Might and Magic universe with a few GOOD single player games, and then think about a MMORPG.
